Before Pokémon There was Pulseman, and It was Very Good

Before the Pokémon craze, Game Freak made this incredible platformer. With the "volt tackle" (the ability to bounce off walls continuously as 45 degree angles as a ball of energy) this often-predictable genre feels new and fresh. Having some of the best graphics to grace the Genesis doesn't hurt either. Here's the 16-Bit Gems Review:
